A+ Cut Of The Week:Week Ending 4/10/2010

This week for the A+ Cut Of  The Week I dug into the vaults and pulled out something that some of you may know and some of  you may not know but let’s suffice it to say, You Need To Learn about this cut.  This, like most things, requires a story.   I get all kinds of compliments on the title of my show alone.  The Old School, New School, Need To Learn Though Show.  People have said I should shorten it, abbreviate it but I refuse to do either.  If you are reading this blog you’d have to know that my show title comes from a Biggie lyric from the classic “Who Shot Ya”  It’s a fitting title because while I am a lover of Old School Hip Hop I am of the mindset that we can’t advance the culture if we’re always looking over our shoulder. Therefore, I am also a lover of New School Hip Hop as well.  However, being a kid that grew up in a house where both of my parents were music lovers, I had an apprciation for everything including but not limited to R & B, Jazz, Funk, Disco and Rock.  I wanted my show to encompass all of the music I loved.  That was the easy part.

I had my format pretty much set up, and I was told that if there was a class on Hip Hop History and Appreciation I could be it’s Professor.  Just one thing.  I didn’t have a theme song.  I felt EVERY great show has a theme song but I had no idea where I would find it.  I had been on the air a week and I was shuffling through my ipod in the grocery store trying to find songs for my next show (it’s a never ending  job.  I’ll tell you about it but that’s another story for another time lol) and I stumble upon this little gem by The Visionaries.   The Visionaries are a super hip hop group from L.A. The group is notable for focusing on positive issues as well as the diverse ethnic origins of its members. The group formed in 1995, and have since released four full-length albums on Up Above Records. The six members of the group have collectively released over twenty solo and side projects.  Their members consist of  2Mex, LMNO, Lord Zen, Dannu, Key Kool and DJ Rhettmatic.  On their We Are The Ones (We Been Waiting For) album they have a song called Need To Learn featuring Rakaa Iriscience from Dilated Peoples, Brother J from X Clan, YZ, RBX from Death Row fame, and Sadat X from Brand Nubian.  Another Madlib Invasion combining the great new school mc’s in The Visionaries along with some well respected veterans from the old school.  The energy of this song is infectious and you can’t help but get swept up in it but at the very end of it I knew this song would be a part of my life forever.  You’ve heard the show theme a few times (hopefully more than that) but now wou’re going to know from whence it came.

This 2006 cut is this week’s A+ Cut Of The Week. I proudly present to you  The Visionaries Need To Learn feat  ft. Rakaa, Brother J, YZ, RBX, Sadat X Hit The Title for the Free Download!  Enjoy!
